Lassie Doesn't Like Heartworms

A few years back there was a big scare revolving around an ingredient within heartworm medications - ivermectin. It was found that collie-type dogs, a category to which the Aussie belongs, are hyper-sensitive to this ingredient. It was advised that those seeking to use heartworm treatment and preventative stay away from brands with ivermectin in them. Since then, the companies have reformulated their concentration of ivermectin and the risk run is slim.

In addition, a new genetic marker has been found that detects drug sensitivity. Any dog can be tested. For more information, click here to find out about MDR1 Screening.
