Now that you've decided to go through with it:

• Before breeding any dog, you should have its eyes cleared and its hips x-rayed. Find out about canine hip dyplasia, which is the reason for x-raying. Eyes should be cleared by CERF (which usually costs $15) at least once, but many breeders clear every year.
• Every breeder should have a good code of ethics. Members of ASCA must agree to this enforceable code before breeding.
• A breeder should have his bitch and stud examined by a vet before breeding. A bitch should be examined during pregnancy, as well as soon after.

The following is a link to my credo and mission in breeding dogs if I were to secure a dog I felt was breeding quality. I think every dog breeder should have one: Mission Statement and Code of Ethics.

Dog breeding, as with all creation of life, involves genetics. Currently, they are working on the Canine Genome project, whose goal it is to find what each chromosome entails, hopefully eradicating any genetic disease.

DNA typing is becoming all the rage. ASCA offers a title for your dog, CP, which is Certified Profiled, and VP, Verified Parentage. VetGen tells you more.
