Many people have asked me what to expect in terms of growth patterns. This is simply a visual of the changes a dog can go through as a puppy.
This is Dusty as a puppy at one day old. As
you can see, he looks more like a rat than a dog. The ears stick out
and are filled with flesh, his eyes are tightly sealed, and his nose
is large and pink.
|
This is Dusty at three weeks old. His ears
are lowering as the flesh falls out and the ears grow, he can now
hear some, and his eyes are opening slowly. They are a bright
blue. His nose is showing some grey spots.
|
Dusty at 5 weeks old. He is now much cuter,
his head is larger and round, his eyes are open but still blue, his
ears are hanging down, but are still small. His nose is showing some
plack spotting.
|
Dusty at seven weeks. He now looks like what
he will look like at one or two years old but in minature. His nose
is more and more black, his eyes are turning brown, and his coat is
thich and fluffy. He is ready to go home.
|
Dusty at 3 months old. He's now in his
uglies. A stage Aussies go through from 3-6 months of age. His front
legs are picking up growth and he now looks a bit slanted as he
stands there. He also has his puppy coat begining to turn into adult
coat. His nose is more filled in, and his ears are growing
larger.
|
Dusty at five months. He's coming out of the
uglies, but his ears are very large, and his coat is still odd. He's
now all legs with a short body. His nose is nearly filled
in.
|
Dusty is now seven months. His ears are
taped down to keep his ears in the triangle shape he was born with.
His nose is almost filled, and his coat is short, as it is growing
in now. His back legs have caught up to the front and surpassed
them, and he now 'stands downhill.'
|
Dusty at one year of age. His nose is filled
in and everything has come into proportion. note: taping did not
totally help his ears. You may rub them into position (for pictures)
but they are rose.
|
Here's Dusty at two years. (He's standing on
a stump, so that's why he's sloping downward.) Notice that his chest
has dropped, and his coat is longer.
|
Generally, at five years of age, a dog has matured
fully, they usually have longer, thicker coats, and they are totally
filled out. |
Here's Dusty at seven and a half years of age. Notice his coat is getting a bit heavier, his copper is grizzling, and his facial features look heavier. Unfortunately, he died six months later of Valley Fever. (He was sick in this photo.)
