The Aussie: Primarily a Herding Dog

sheep

Nothing is more awe inspiring than watching this breed do what it was bred to do. Nothing is more proud than having your own dog out there evaluating the stock and making decisions accordingly. This is when the biddibility, intelligence, structure, and talent obvious in every good Australian Shepherd pay off.

The Australian shepherd is one of a few shepherd breeds in the United States that still has a place on the ranch on cattle and sheep operations. They were developed in the United States to function as a versatile ranch dog, protecting the property, managing the stock for care and sale, helping gather in the fields with cattlemen on horseback. All these purposes are reflected in the Aussies unique working style.
